“Change happens throughout movement and movement heals.”
The Jill Hinson Method for Breast Cancer Handbook is a combination of:
Range of Motion
We all face challenges, both physical and mental, throughout this life. Unfortunately, breast cancer effects 1 in every 8 women, and 1 in 833 men. Some of the side effects of fighting breast cancer might include loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, weakness and fatigue, loss of range of motion, and lymphedema.
Can you relate?
In addition to offering you Pilates Matwork exercises, you will receive options for aerobic activity and range of motion exercises. As the American Cancer Society says, “ Exercise to help improve aerobic (heart-lung) capacity is also important for women who have had breast cancer. There’s evidence that fitness and weight loss may even help lower the risk that some types of cancer will come back after treatment.”
Exercise is very beneficial after surgery. I believe that two to four weeks post-op is an ideal time to start range of motion exercises, since movement in a short range is beneficial after surgery. Many people try to do too much too soon, so educating yourself is critical as well as having conversations with your doctor as to when it is right for you to start range of motion exercises. While it’s best to start as early as your doctor allows, there are still benefits in practicing these exercises daily for years after surgery.
Pilates offers the unique opportunity to move your body while lying down, standing and seated, as well as offering modifications for multiple levels, good days and tough days. Pilates focuses on muscle strengthening, and the upper body benefits from Pilates and range of motion exercises are critical in working to create a uniformly developed body, as Joseph Pilates taught. Balance is important because it is a part of everything we do. If we have good balance we are less likely to fall or get injured. Pilates works each side of your body equally in all planes of movement, so that you feel better mentally and physically. It also teaches correct breathing which oxygenates the blood and increases circulation.
